I used to very infrequently go to a casino with my friends, just for fun, not with the aim of making ourselves rich. I'd always set a quota (say £50) and if I lost it then I've spent that amount on a good night out, so no issue. If I broke-even then I've had a free night of entertainment. And if I was up then that's considered a bonus to the evening. But that's all easier said than done, casinos are amazing at what they do, provide the atmosphere to make you want to try all the games, make the exit's hard to find, and gambling itself is so dangerously addictive. As soon as you win and find yourself in profit, the urge to keep going is overwhelming.
These days I don't gamble at all, not even the lottery. I see people buy tens of tickets in one go and that truly baffles me. The odds are so against you that, even though buying 10 tickets technically does increase your chances ten-fold, the odds of actually winning are still so astronomically small that there's really no point in putting money on more than one ticket.
I also find it funny that people will think really hard about creating a seemingly random combination of numbers for the lottery, trying to avoid man-made patterns. Even though the odds of getting 1,2,3,4,5,6 are exactly the same as any other combination, our ability to associate that with a predefined pattern adds an automatic stigma to choosing it. If anything you're better off choosing the former, as you're probably more likely to have to not share the jackpot if you end up winning because no bugger else has chosen it.
